Definition
The civil war from 1861-1865 between the states of the North (The Union) and those states of the South which endorsed slavery (The Confederacy), the latter ultimately failing in their fight for independence.
A civil war is a war within a specific country or territory between forces from within the country. Famous civil wars include the English Civil War and the American Civil War (1860-65).
