A-Z: General definitions: Anabaptist

Definition

Groups originating in the sixteenth century in Switzerland and Germany. They argued against church and state being linked, and for the baptism only of those old enough to understand the meaning of the Christian faith and repentance (rather than infants). This led to their nickname of anabaptists or 'rebaptisers'. (See also Baptist)

Translation

Greek: Baptizo, 'to immerse' or 'dip'.
