A-Z: General definitions: Nature
Definition
1. The Creation, especially the part not made by man or not urban, and therefore the countryside. 2. A power considered to have power over things in this world: Nature gives living things their bodies, including beauty. Like Fortune, she was considered, ultimately, to serve God. Nature too epitomises an aspect of this world that the Middle Ages considered very important: the fact that life here is transient, with living things coming into being and later dying. Nature, like Fortune, produces good things down here on earth but also takes them away. Nothing in the natural world can be permanently relied on.
In the Bible, 'creation' can mean both the process by which the universe was made by God and the created order which emerged.
a power believed to randomly distribute good and bad fortunes
