Usage

Refers particularly to (the cry of) those in deep distress. The translation of the Latin Vulgate Bible, 'De profundis' is used in art, music and literature, e.g. Oscar Wilde's poem of that name.

Definition

The Psalm originally seems to refer to the Psalmist's penitence rather than primarily his feelings of misery, but it undoubtedly suits both.
