A-Z: General definitions: Realism
Definition
Beginning in the early nineteenth century, realism was an artistic movement that reacted against the unrealistic situations and characters which had been the basis of Romantic drama and literature. Realism in drama describes any play that depicts ordinary people in everyday situations, using actual furniture on set and objects from daily life for props etc. See Drama Developments article Naturalism and Realism
