A-Z: General definitions: Battle of the Boyne

Definition

A significant battle fought in 1690 across the River Boyne in Ireland between Protestant King William III (who had been invited to replace James)  and the previous Catholic King, James II (James VII of Scotland).  William's forces defeated James' army, thereby maintaining Protestant English rule in Ireland, and James II failed in his attempt to regain the English, Scottish and Irish thrones.
