A-Z: General definitions: Christ's Body
Definition
This term is a metaphor used to refer to the Church, the members of which regard Christ as their ‘head’. Symbolically, the bread used in Holy Communion also stands for the body of Jesus.
An image or form of comparison where one thing is said actually to be another - e.g. 'fleecy clouds'.
1. Term for a worshipping community of Christians.
2. The building in which Christians traditionally meet for worship.
3. The worldwide community of Christian believers.
The central act of Christian worship in which bread and wine are consumed in the way that Jesus demonstrated at the Last Supper before his betrayal and death.
The name given to the man believed by Christians to be the Son of God. Also given the title Christ, meaning 'anointed one' or Messiah. His life is recorded most fully in the Four Gospels.
