1. Phrase from the Old Testament book of Isaiah describing the Suffering Servant, later interpreted as referring to Jesus Christ 2. Depiction of Christ as the Man of Sorrows, a figure of self-sacrificing love.

Old Testament prophet who lived in Jerusalem in the 7th century BCE, and prophesied under King Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. He is regarded as one of the greatest Old Testament prophets.
