Definition
The idea that there are many gods and goddesses which control our lives and the natural world around us. Ancient Greeks and Romans, for example, believed in a god of wine, a god of war, a goddess of beauty and a goddess of wisdom, among many others. Some religions, including Christianity, Judaism and Islam are monotheistic ' that is, they believe in one supreme being, one God.
