Definition

1. The area of land roughly between the eastern Mediterranean and the River Jordan, which was the historic territory of Israel/Judah, but referred to as Palestine by the time of Roman occupation (63BC onwards). 

2. Today, two sections of the above territory, under Arab/Muslim (as opposed to Jewish) control: one bordering the Mediterranean and Egyptian border (known as the Gaza strip); the other to the left of the River Jordan (known as the West Bank).
