Definition
Medieval pilgrims often went to the Holy Land, bringing back a palm leaf as a token of their visit, hence the term ‘palmer’.
Belonging to the Middle Ages.
1. Someone who undertakes a journey to a holy place (such as a biblical site or the shrines of the saints) to seek God's help, to give thanks or as an act of penance.
2. A Christian journeying through life towards heaven.
Historically refers to the land of Israel and Palestine, lying between the River Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea, which has holy and religious significance to Jews, Christians and Muslims.
