A-Z: General definitions: Anoint

In the Old Testament Kings and Priests were ceremonially anointed (touched with holy oil) to show that they had been chosen by God and equipped to serve him (Psalms 89:38). Key figures such as King David, through whom God works to deliver his people, are referred to as Messiah ('an anointed one'). Christians subsequently applied this title to Jesus (Acts 10:38).

Hebrew: Mashach [verb], Messiah [noun], Greek: Chrio [verb] christos [noun],'to anoint'.
