A-Z: General definitions: Arethusa
Definition
According to Greek myth, Arethusa was a nymph who the river-god Alpheus fell in love with as she was bathing in his water. She ran away but he chased her, turning her into a well. Alpheus then turned himself into a river, running from Peloponnesus and joining with the waters in the well.
In classical mythology, a feminine spirit of the fields; in pastoral poetry a synonym for a young woman
