A-Z: General definitions: Bede
Definition
(c673-735). Anglo-Saxon historian and biblical scholar. Sent to monastery of Wearmouth at age seven and was later transferred to Jarrow. In his lifetime he was reknowned for his learning, Bede wrote treatises on poetry, time and cosmography. Historical works include History of the Abbots, prose and verse versions of the Life of St Cuthbert and Ecclesiastical History of the English People.
Term used to describe the Germanic tribes who settled in England from the mid fifth century onwards; also used of their history, culture and language until the Norman Conquest in 1066.
The house of a religious community.
