A-Z: General definitions: Brimstone
Definition
An archaic term for burning sulphur. Used in the phrase fire and brimstone which, in the Bible, signified God's wrath against sin. Brimstone is associated with hell, a place of eternal punishment.
Meaning no longer in current usage; often used of obsolete words or phrases.
In the Bible, a severe punishment from God on those who have rebelled against him.
The Christian Bible consists of the Old Testament scriptures inherited from Judaism, together with the New Testament, drawn from writings produced from c.40-125CE, which describe the life of Jesus and the establishment of the Christian church.
The Bible describes God as the unique supreme being, creator and ruler of the universe.
The wrath of God appears in the Old Testament as a divine response to a world that has been corrupted by sin and injustice. The New Testament speaks of God's wrath both in present and future terms.
Disobedience to the known will of God. According to Christian theology human beings have displayed a pre-disposition to sin since the Fall of Humankind.
Jesus describes hell as the place where Satan and his demons reside and the realm where unrepentant souls will go after the Last Judgement.
According to the biblical account of God's judgement of humans, God rewards the righteous but condemns the wicked.
