A-Z: General definitions: Charismatic

Definition

In a Christian context, a term describing someone who it is believed has received / exercises unearned 'gifts' or special abilities from the Holy Spirit in order to build up the church eg. the gift of preaching, healing, hospitality, prophesy etc.(1 Corinthians 12:4-11). Charismatic churches are those seeking to revive the exercise of such spiritual gifts, who may therefore have a less obviously structured style of worship.

In a secular context, pertaining to a gifted person who has the ability to attract people to them or their cause because of their gifts.

Translation

Greek: charisma, 'a gift of grace'.
