Name originally given to followers of Jesus by outsiders and gradually adopted by the Early Church. In the Book of Acts those who wished to follow Christ were told to repent and be baptised in the name of Jesus, so that they would receive forgiveness from God and the gift of the Holy Spirit. (Acts 11:26)
