Definition
A genre of drama that has a happy ending, often with a marriage, and produces laughter. See tragedy. Romantic comedy deals with happy love, usually leading to marriage. Typical comic devices are jokes, tricks, mistaken identity, reunion of lost family, comic characters and buffoons, clumsy or naïve characters, love at first sight, and villains outwitted.
A French word meaning type or class. A major division of type or style in an art-form. A sub-genre is a lesser division. The main literary genres are novel, short story, comedy, tragedy, epic and lyric.
