A-Z: General definitions: Creed
Definition
Brief summaries of Christian belief appear in the New Testament and more substantial statements were agreed over the succeeding centuries. Three creeds are used in the Western liturgy: the short Apostles' Creed (used only in the Western Church), the Nicene Creed, which originated at the Council of Constantinople in 381, and the longer 'Athanasian' Creed which probably dates from c. 500 and was used in the instruction of the laity. Of these the most important in the worship of the medieval church was the Nicene Creed, recited at the Eucharist on Sundays and feast days. These major Christian creeds date back to the early centuries of the Church and transcend many denominational boundaries. (Liturgy Morning Prayer:Apostles' Creed)

Latin: from 'credo' meaning 'I believe'- Modern
I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. (Common Worship)
