A-Z: General definitions: Decorum

Definition

Nowadays, ‘decorum’ means appropriate social behaviour, particularly in formal situations, but in classical times it meant ‘appropriate’ in a more general way. It was not appropriate, for example, that a slave-girl should talk like a queen or that a hero should speak in a loose or informal style.
