Definition

Roman goddess of hunting, sister of Apollo. (Greek name, Artemis.) Actaeon was a skilled huntsman who angered Artemis, either by seeing her bathing naked, or by boasting that he was a better hunter than she was. In revenge, she turned him into a deer. His own hounds picked up his scent, and hunted him down, tearing him into pieces while his friends encouraged them and wished Actaeon was there to see his hounds at work. Actaeon was there: the goddess kept his human mind inside the deer, so that he knew what was happening to him.
