Definition

On the orders of Henry VIII, his minister Thomas Cromwell and Parliament, between 1536 -1540 the monastic houses of England and Wales (numbering around 800 and involving around 1 in every 400 of the population) were forcibly closed down between 1536 -1540 and their extensive property surrendered to the Crown.
