Definition

1. Along with visions, seen in the Bible as a specific way in which God can communicate with his people. Examples the warning given to Joseph in the Old Testament of famine in Egypt (Genesis 41:25-28) and the instructions given to Joseph in the New Testament to marry Mary (Matthew 1:20-21) and later escape to Egypt (Matthew 2:13-14).

2. A genre of literature where the writer tells the story as if it were a dream. Alice in Wonderland is an example of dream literature. It was also a common medieval literary form.
