A-Z: General definitions: Egypt

Definition

In the Old Testament the land where Joseph and Jacob (Genesis 42:1-2) found sustenance in times of famine, though later Israelites were held captive and made to work as slaves for the Pharaoh (Exodus 1:11-14). In the Old Testament it can therefore symbolise oppression; in the New Testament it is also the place to which Jesus' family escape to in order to avoid the slaughter of boys under two ordered by Herod the Great (Matthew 2:13-15).
