A-Z: General definitions: Epic
Definition
A long poem which tells some heroic story from history or myth; often one important to the identity of the culture which produced it. Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey were – even in ancient times – key to the heritage of the Greeks; Virgil’s Aeneid, about the events leading up to the foundation of Rome, was vital to the Romans’ proud self-image.
(9th or 8th century BCE). Greek poet to whom the highly-influential, epic poems, The Iliad and The Odyssey, were attributed.
