Definition

A power, with an ever-moving wheel, believed to distribute randomly all the good and bad fortunes (money, status, power, etc.) of this world. Fortune was considered to serve God. She epitomises the Middle Ages tendency to consider this world and its gifts and pleasures to be of little value compared with the next world. Fortune is a personification of how unreliable the good things of this world are.
