A-Z: General definitions: Milton
Definition
(1608-1674) English poet, most famous for his epic poem, Paradise Lost. He was well educated, becoming proficient in Latin, Greek, Italian, French and Hebrew. During the English Civil War he sided with Cromwell and subsequently worked for the Commonwealth. When the monarchy was re-established in 1660 he was temporarily arrested. He completed Paradise Lost in 1667, having been blind since 1651.
(1642-51). Series of military conflicts which rose out of religious, political and financial tensions between King Charles I and Parliament, which was increasingly influenced by Puritan sympathies.
(1599- 1658) English statesman and soldier. Puritan Member of Parliament who led the Roundhead forces during the English Civil War. Following the defeat and death of Charles I, Cromwell ruled as 'Lord Protector' from 1653 to 1658.
