A-Z: General definitions: Parthenon

Definition

Pre-eminent cultural monument of Ancient Greece, the Parthenon is the classical temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena, on the Acropolis in Athens. Some of the surviving marble sculpures by the Greek sculptor Phidius were removed from the site by the British Earl of Elgin in the early nineteenth century.  The 'Elgin Marbles' are currently on display in the British Museum in London and Greece continues to strive for their return.
