A-Z: General definitions: Picaresque novel


Originally, a novel about the adventures of a rogue or vagabond. The meaning has evolved slightly to denote a novel structured around the disparate adventures of a single protagonist. The Spanish novel Don Quixote is seen as a good example of a picaresque novel. See Wanderings.
