A-Z: General definitions: Pitch

Definition

The pitch of the voice is defined as the ‘rate of vibration of the vocal folds’. It depends on the length and thickness of the vocal cords, as well as the tightening and relaxation of the muscles surrounding them. The pitch of someone's voice can also be affected by emotions, moods and inflection, or be deliberately changed (as when mimicing someone for example).
