Definition
English poor laws were in existence from the Tudor period until the instigation of the welfare system after the Second World War. The New Poor Law of 1834 aimed to reduce the burden for parishes supporting those in poverty, by focusing on providing assistance through workhouses.
Area with its own church, served by a priest who has the spiritual care of all those living within it.
Workhouses were set up where those poor unable to support themselves could receive board and lodgings in exchange for work
