A-Z: General definitions: Spenserian stanza
Definition
The stanza form used by the Elizabethan poet Spenser in his epic poem The Faerie Queen. It is basically an iambic pentameter octave with the addition of hexameter or alexandrine ninth line, rhyming ababbcbcc.
The technical name for a verse, or a regular repeating unit of so many lines in a poem. Poetry can be stanzaic or non-stanzaic.
A line containing five metrical feet each consisting of one stressed and one unstressed syllable.
The 8-line stanza of a Petrarchan sonnet, always occupying the first eight lines. It sometimes has a division halfway, creating two quatrains. It poses a problem or describes some single object or incident.
A line of poetry containing six feet or stresses (beats).
A line of verse containing twelve syllables.
