Definition
A mark made upon the skin by burning with a hot iron or cutting as a punishment or sign of slavery; A mark of disgrace or shame; (Plural, stigmata) Marks similar to the wounds suffered by Christ at the Crucifixion, said to have appeared on the bodies of certain saints.Absolute ownership of one person by another. Common in biblical times and widespread until the nineteenth century.
