A-Z: General definitions: Syrinx
Definition
Syrinx was a nymph in Arcadia. Pan desired her, but she fled. On the banks of a river, when she could run no further and Pan was just grabbing hold of her, the river nymphs changed her into a handful of reeds. Pan sighed, and his breath, passing through the reeds, made music. He cut them into different lengths, joined them together and so made panpipes.
