A-Z: General definitions: Tithe

Definition

A tenth; the practice of giving ten percent of the harvest or animal herds to God as an offering of gratitude (Leviticus 27:30-32). In the Old Testament the tithes were paid to the Levites who looked after the sanctuary of God and therefore did not have any means of income or inheritance. The practice of tithing continued into the New Testament and was endorsed by Jesus (Matthew 23:23).
