A-Z: Common sayings from the Bible: Cornerstone

Usage

The fundamental basis of an argument, on which the rest is built; of a person, the one around whom a team is built.

Definition

This is an important image in the early Christian understanding of who Jesus was: it showed from the Old Testament scripture that Jesus would be rejected, even though he was the very foundation of God's building. There is some interchange in textual and translation history between 'cornerstone' and 'capstone', which have different architectural purposes.
