Most often this refers to the failure of someone who had promised great things.

Definition

Paul's argument is over the effectiveness of good deeds as against God's unmerited mercy. He says that if one trusts in good deeds, grace becomes unnecessary ' but no-one can be good enough. Only God's grace will save a person.
