Definition
The parents of Mary the mother of Jesus are not mentioned in the canonical Gospels but the apocryphal Protevangelium of James states that they were called Joachim and Anne and offers a detailed account of the Virgin's birth and early life.
The mother of Jesus. The Gospels state that Mary's pregnancy was brought about by the Holy Spirit and not through a human relationship; she is therefore known as the 'Virgin'.
