Definition
A religious order of monks who follow the rule of Saint Francis of Assisi. Founded in 1529, they valued poverty highly in an attempt to revert to a more primitive life of faith, as practised by St Francis.

In the New Testament the term is used of all Christians but gradually came to describe an especially holy person.
