A-Z: General definitions: Chant
Definition
A style of music in which the words are usually prose rather than verse and the tune is usually built on a simple intonation rather than a complex melody and rhythm. Chant is frequently used as part of worship in some Christian traditions. It has long been associated with the monastic pattern of life; in recent years some recordings of chant have enjoyed unexpected commercial success.
Name originally given to disciples of Jesus by outsiders and gradually adopted by the Early Church.
