Definition
Charles I (1600-49) succeeded to the English throne in 1625, but after the English Civil War of 1642-46 was deposed by Oliver Cromwell leading an army loyal to Parliament and subsequently executed.
(1642-51). Series of military conflicts which rose out of religious, political and financial tensions between King Charles I and Parliament, which was increasingly influenced by Puritan sympathies.
(1599- 1658) English statesman and soldier. Puritan Member of Parliament who led the Roundhead forces during the English Civil War. Following the defeat and death of Charles I, Cromwell ruled as 'Lord Protector' from 1653 to 1658.
In the United Kingdom it is the highest political body, composed of the Sovereign, the House of Lords and elected officials in the House of Commons, who make laws and have the responsibility of running the country.
