A-Z: General definitions: Dives

Definition

A principal character in a parable Jesus told (Luke 16:19-31) to warn the selfish rich that justice will be done. In life Lazarus, a poor man, sat outside the mansion of the rich man Dives to receive whatever food might fall from his table. In death the two roles were reversed, Lazarus residing comfortably in heaven and Dives being tormented in hell. He asked that Lazarus be allowed to relieve his thirst. This was refused because of the gulf fixed between heaven and hell. A second appeal came for Lazarus to go and warn Dives' family so that they might not join him in hell but was refused because they had had adequate warning already through God's laws and the words of the prophets.
