Definition

Bertolt Brecht coined the term ‘Epic Theatre’, of which he was an exponent, to describe theatrical performances intended to help audiences become more critically aware. The episodic dramas made no attempt to replicate ‘reality’ but highlighted their own artifice so as to disengage an emotional response. See Drama Developments article Twentieth century experiments
