A-Z: General definitions: Evangelical Movement

Definition

Movement in England and elsewhere from the eighteenth century onwards which stresses the following beliefs: that the Bible is the primary way to understand the truth about God; that each person needs to experience conversion, receiving forgiveness, new life and the gift of the Holy Spirit to enable them to serve God in the world; that salvation is a free gift from God, which cannot be earned through human effort but can only come through relying on the forgiveness won by Christ on the Cross and depending on God's grace.
