Definition

A system of government where all power is centred under the authority of a dictator, who exercises total control over the economy and over society. Any form of opposition is suppressed through terror and censorship, often accompanied by a policy of fierce nationalism and violent racism. Hitler’s Germany and Mussolini’s Italy are examples of fascist European dictatorships in the middle of the twentieth century. See article on Communism and Fascism.
