Definition

The fig tree was one of the most important domesticated plants in the biblical era and is referred to freqently in the Bible. In the Old Testament book of Genesis Adam and Eve covered their nakedness with leaves from the fig tree (Genesis 3:7). In the New Testament Jesus cursed an unfruitful fig tree, which then withered (Mark 11:12-21).
