A-Z: General definitions: Field of Blood

Definition

In the New Testament Judas, one of Jesus' disciples betrays Jesus and hands him to the authorities who are responsible for cruxifying him (Matthew 26:47-49). Judas received thirty pieces of silver for his work (Matthew 26:15), but later felt guilty and returned the money to the temple, and then hanged himself (Matthew 27:3-5). The money was used by the chief priests to buy a field (the 'potters field') in which to bury strangers. The field was then known as Aceldama - the field of blood (Matthew 27:6-10).
