A-Z: General definitions: Good Samaritan

Definition

The Gospel of Luke (Luke 10:25-37) records Jesus telling a parable about a Good Samaritan in reponse to a lawyer's request for a definition of a good neighbour. The Samaritans were looked down upon by the Jews. The parable tells of a man who was robbed and beaten on a journey. Two Jewish leaders - a priest and a Levite - saw him and passed him by, giving no help. Then the Samaritan came along and took care of him, even paying for a local innkeeper to look after him until he was better. Jesus told the lawyer to act like the good Samaritan to be a good neighbour.
