Definition

(Also known as Gehenna) A valley to the south and west of Jerusalem deemed to be cursed after pagan child sacrifice took place there in Old Testament times; in New Testament times a place where refuse was tipped and burnt. These associations led to the term being associated with hell (a place of fire and pain, the destination of the wicked), hades or purgatory.
