A-Z: General definitions: John Dryden
Definition
(1631 - 1700) Poet and playwright of Restoration England who became Poet Laureate in 1678. His influence was such that in literary circles the period was referred to as the ‘Age of Dryden’.
To replace or put back something which has been lost or damaged. In English history, the term especially applies to the Restoration of the monarchy when King Charles II returned to England in 1660 after 11 years of republican rule.
A poet appointed by the Sovereign or Head of State, usually to promote poetry or write poems on national occasions.
